 · Tuesday May 18, PITTSFIELD - When Stearns Elementary School fifth- grader Noah Shepardson had to write an essay about what he would do if he were president of the United States of America, the boy, like any other student, just wanted to do a good job. In addition to receiving a grade for their work, teacher Andrew Mickle also submitted the students' essays to the Scholastic Book Clubs' national " If I Were President" writing contest, If I were President2 Pages Words. If I were president I would strive to accomplish these three major things. First, I would strengthen our educational system, second, I would make certain that everyone has equal and fair treatment in our society, and lastly, I would secure our borders. Our education system in America is not one in which we should be very proud of  · If I were president, two of my main focuses would be reducing job cuts and going ‘Green’. My first plan of action would be to reduce gas prices by not importing oil; I would drill it here in

In addition to receiving a grade for their work, teacher Andrew Mickle also submitted the students' essays to the Scholastic Book Clubs' national " If I Were President" writing contest, if i were president essay contest, sponsored back in February. Earlier this month, Mickle received a surprise box of 25 books related to topics in American history sent in the mail to the attention of Shepardson, if i were president essay contest.


The next day a letter came, informing the teacher that his student's essay was chosen as one of the top 10, out of approximately 7, entries.


Mickle initially kept the win a secret. On if i were president essay contest Fridays, Stearns Elementary School holds a gathering to share good news and school updates.


During the May 7 gathering, Mickle, Shepardson's father Brian Shepardson, and School Committee member Katherine Yon surprised the boy with the news by making a special presentation.


I was hoping for a good grade," the young Shepardson said. Given his prize, he said, "I was amazed. I'm still amazed. I'm not really what you'd if i were president essay contest lucky most of the time. For him to receive this honor in front of his school sends a good, inspiring message to other kids, too," Mickle said. The student said ending the war in Iraq and becoming the first president to establish world peace would be his priorities, followed by addressing global warming, greening the environment and protecting wildlife.


Health care, education and supporting earthquake victims are also among his presidential interests. The boy said he was inspired to write the essay because of his father. I want to be like my dad and help improve the world. Asked to rate the current president, Shepardson thinks Barack Obama is "doing pretty well. Changing the world's problems is probably hard for him because you can't please everyone. If he were president, Shepardson said he'd appoint some "smart, loyal, and hardworking people" to his Cabinet to help him do his job.


He'd also appoint a few other classmates and friends for their skills and virtues. Asked what he learned from the experience, Shepardson said, "You can learn a lot about the country by researching it. You can make change if you vote.
